Today rabbit breeding in the Russian Federation is developing and is characterized by an increase in rabbit population. In all categories of farm households it makes up 2,990 rabbits. In recent years there is a rapid development of farm households (including private ones) where there is a steady trend of rabbit population increase. The share is 86-87%.

Moscow, Sverdlovsk, Nizhny- Novgorod and Tyumen regions as well as the Republic of Tatarstan and the Perm Territory are engaged in brood rabbit husbandry. There are 13 organizations breeding rabbits, which are officially registered.

A great incentive for national rabbit breeding has become a sharp increase of prices for rabbit meat during recent years: the retail price for 1 kg of fresh rabbit meat is up to 600 rubles, imported frozen rabbit meat costs up to 350 rubles per kg. Currently 10,000-15,000 tons of rabbit meat are being produced in Russia. The share of Russian rabbit meat on the market is 2.8-27.8%.

Within the framework of the State Program of Agricultural Development and Regulation of Agricultural Products, Raw Materials and Foodstuff Markets 2013-2020, subsidies are allocated from the federal and regional budgets for rabbit breeding, there is the state support of small farm households, partial subsidizing of loans and credits, as well as other forms of support for agricultural producers.
