The main directions and plans for the development of horse breeding in the Republic of Tatarstan were discussed at the Kazan Hippodrome.
A meeting of horse owners of the Republic of Tatarstan was held today at the Kazan Hippodrome. The meeting summarized the results and discussed the main directions for the development of horse breeding in the Republic of Tatarstan. The event was attended by Gelyus Bayazitov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Tatarstan; Gabdulkhak Motygullin, Deputy Head of the Main Veterinary Department of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan; and others.
Opening the meeting, Gelyus Bayazitov presented an analysis and summarized the results for the first quarter of 2026. He noted that by the end of 2025, the horse population in the region reached 31,100 head, 400 head more than in 2024.
"Despite the fact that the horse population has remained virtually flat for the past six years, we managed to achieve growth this year," the Deputy Minister emphasized.
According to Gelyus Bayazitov, the horse population is based on the availability of mares, which are used for subsequent reproduction. The population has increased significantly in the Sabinsky, Drozhzhanovsky, and Tyulyachinsky districts.
Participants paid special attention to the unique Tatar horse breed. Marina Sushentsova, Associate Professor and PhD in Agricultural Sciences at the Kazan Academy of Veterinary Medicine, spoke about the status and development prospects of the Tatar horse breed.
Ruslan Nuriyev, head of the peasant farm, and Marat Gubaydullin, manager of Khuzangayevskoye LLC, shared their experiences in developing horse breeding on their farms.
The main outcome of the meeting was a discussion of the long-term development plan for the industry. In accordance with the instructions of the Rais of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, to increase the horse population, a regional project for the development of horse breeding and equestrian sports was developed and approved. It runs from 2027 to 2031.
The horse breeding project includes various subsidies aimed at supporting agricultural enterprises.
