Autumn pruning of fruit trees in the garden: how to do it correctly so as not to harm plants

25 October 2021, Monday

It's time to start pruning fruit trees and shrubs in the garden. Some plants should be properly prepared for winter, others have already suffered from the elements during the growing season and they urgently need a specialist. Lyubov Zanina, Deputy head of the branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Rosselkhoznadzor" in the Republic of Tatarstan, tells how to properly prune trees in autumn.

Autumn pruning of trees should be carried out after leaf fall, when sap movement stops, and a period of rest comes for trees. It is necessary to finish the process before the onset of frost.

In one pruning, it is impossible to remove a large number of large branches at once. This can significantly weaken the tree and even cause disease or death in the future. Branches with signs of disease, broken or dry are always removed first.

After removing large branches, the wounds of trees are necessarily covered with garden pitch or oil paint or other wound-healing agents.

When pruning, always try to use a sharp and high-quality tool, since a blunt instrument can cause lacerations that will heal for a long time.
