The pledge of rich crops is winter grain crops. In order to provide the stable production of crops in the Russian Federation it is planned to put not less than 18 million ha under winter crops every year.
Within the framework of the state task to create “a highly productive winter rye variety with a high baking value resistant to stress environmental factors”, a new variety called “Zilant” is prepared for the state strain testing. Hybridization was carried out in 2005, breeding was going on for 10 years.
The peculiarity of the thorough work was to evaluate the blossom time length, early ripening, diseased with snow rot, root decay and ergot.
Among the advantages of “Zilant” variety there is its short stalk (by 16 cm shorter than the standard), the variety is resistant to rot infections and ergot, it has a great potential of high crop yields and adaptability, etc.
Beside all these factors, during the contest testing for 5 years “Zilant” variety has had a yield gain of 0.61 t/ha (15.9%) in comparison with “Tatarstan Relay” standard.
