According to the recent data, the total harvesting area in the Russian Federation is 1,014,600 ha in the current year, which makes 92.8% of the last year level. The harvesting area was reduced due to the overproduction of grain last year, which resulted in low prices. It should be noted that during the last 5 years on the territory of our country the average grain production is 0.7 million tons.

685.6 thousand ha with buckwheat (69.4% of the total area) have been thrashed. 700,000 tons have been milled with the average crop yield of 10.2 dt/ha. This is enough for full provision of the country population with this crop. Taking into consideration the stocks of buckwheat, there is an opportunity of export. From the beginning of the current year, 87,000 tons have been exported already.

In September of the current year the average price is 7.24 rubles per kilo, which is by 15.7% lower than last year. According the recent data of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation he average retail price for buckwheat is 35.48 rubles per kilo, which is by 4.5% lower than last year.

Russia takes the first place in the world among buckwheat producers. Buckwheat is popular among Russian people. It is rich in mirco- and marco-elements, vitamins, etc. It contains “slow” carbohydrates. People feel full for a long time without dramatic changes of blood sugar level.

The consumption rate of buckwheat is 3.5 kg a year. That is why in Russia there is a need for buckwheat of 550,000 tons.
