The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation put forward an initiative to set a new professional holiday – Veterinary Day. The draft regulation, agreed with the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Labour of the Russian Federation, was introduced by the federal agrarian department into the Government of the Russian Federation.

The initiative to set Veterinary Day as an official professional holiday has been waiting for long. That is why AIC Trade Union of the Russian Federation, the National Association of Organizations of Veterinary and Biology Industry as well as the Russian Veterinary Association and the representatives of the state veterinary service supported this idea.

According to the project summary of the government decree veterinaries play an important role in health support of both animals and people, contribute to biological and food safety and promote favourable epizootic situation in the country. The work of the Russian veterinary service is highly appreciated in the international veterinary society, namely by the International Epizootic Agency, which transferred its European regional representative office from the territory of the European Union to Moscow.

Nowadays in the system of the state veterinary service over 100,000 professionals are working.

Veterinaries also work in education and science (higher educational institutions, secondary vocational educational institutions, collages, research studies institutes, laboratories), in the sphere of industry (meat and fish packing-houses, biology industry plants, factories on fodder production and medicine production), in the zoo and circus, equestrian centers and race tracks, dolphinariums and other organizations. A large amount of veterinaries works as entrepreneurs.
