Need for protection of planting against rodents

10 April 2014, Thursday

The number of mouse-like rodents has increased in winter cereals plantings this year.

The reason for this situation could be surface tillage, which has become quite popular in the republic recently, long-term conservation of old plantings of perennial grasses, weed infestation of crops, process losses during harvesting.

It should be noted that mouse-like rodents are gluttonous and prolific. By eating young winter cereals they can destroy them. In case the propagation and expansion of rodents are not prevented at the very beginning the animals can migrate for 3-5 km. Moreover, a single vole can eat green footstalks at 300% of its weight a day.

In order to decrease the number of mouse-like rodents the branch of FSBI “Russian Agricultural Center” in the Republic of Tatarstan recommends to examine the fields of winter cereals, perennial grasses, road-sides, tree lines, etc.

In case of threshold crossing (30 inhabited holes per hectare in winter cereals, 70 inhabited holes per hectare in perennial grasses) it is no use to wait for the further increasing of the number of rodents, it is recommended to start treatment.

Absence of systematic protection of planting against rodents can lead not only to the growing number of these animals but also to the outbreak of epidemic hemorrhagic fever among people.
