This year, at the initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Tatarstan, the President of the Republic, Rustam Minnikhanov, made a decision to allocate 10 million rubles for a program for the sale of vegetable seeds to the rural population.

The main task of the program was the gratuitous transfer of seeds and seedlings to the rural population, which allowed the self-employment of villagers in a difficult economic situation and support to the food security of the republic.

Residents of the villages of Tatarstan received 31 tons of onion sets for free, 1 ton of carrot seeds, 820 kg of table beets and 162 865 cabbage seedlings.

The total sowing and planting area was 604.1 hectares. Onion sets “Stuttgarter” were sown on an area of 62 hectares, carrots “Chantenay Royal” - 333 hectares, beetroot “Mulatka” - 205 hectares, cabbage “Flexim” - 4.1 hectares.

The program this year, due to the current epidemiological situation, has gained even more popularity.

This spring, the seeds were first of all distributed to lonely pensioners, unemployed residents of settlements.

For example, the rural settlement of Alkeevsky district through the district consumer cooperative received 1300 kg of onion sets, 50 kg of carrot seeds, 55 kg of beet seeds, and 6,500 cabbage seedlings.

“The residents keep the harvested crop for themselves, and sell the surplus to the Raypotrebsoyuz at reasonable prices, for example, we take potatoes for 10 rubles / kg, onions - for 14 rubles, carrots and beets for 12 rubles,” says Ilnur Khabibullin, head of the Raypotrebsoyuz of the Alkeevsky district.

The harvest acquired from the rural population is sold at agricultural fairs.

“We are glad that there is such a program aimed at supporting rural residents. I am satisfied with the quality of the seeds, the harvest turned out to be great”, says librarian Leysan Khamatvalieva.

It should be noted that 3.5 tons of vegetables which were grown by residents of the Alkeevsky district, had been sold at an agricultural fair.

Harvesting is now in full swing. It is planned that the villagers who received free seeds will collect 2,790 tons of onions, 6,660 tons of carrots, 3,075 tons of beets, 380 tons of cabbage.
